Lion is a 2016 biographical drama feature film directed by Garth Davis, and written by Luke Davies, based on the non-fiction book A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley. The film tells the true story of how Brierley, 25 years after being separated from his family in Burhanpur, sets out to find them.
The film stars Dev Patel, Sunny Pawar, Rooney Mara, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman.
The version shown tonight - LION Live - is an adapted short-film version of the original feature, with an original score composed for full orchestra by film composer and UNSW Music Honours student Sam Weiss, to be performed live by the UNSW Orchestra & conducted by Steven Hillinger.
LION Live has been edited by Sam Weiss and Michael Amoroso, specifically for tonight’s concert.
Sam’s score features a wide range of compositional techniques and orchestral textures, and sophisticatedly underpins the emotional narrative.
In its original form, Lion received six Oscar nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Patel), Best Supporting Actress (Kidman) and Best Adapted Screenplay. It won two BAFTA Awards for Best Supporting Actor (Patel) and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film is also one of the highest-grossing Australian films of all time.
Please note that See-Saw Films is the owner of the footage that is being shown tonight. The production team at See-Saw Films has been kind enough to allow Sam to use the film for the purposes of his research and study.
Duration: 18 minutes.
